Watches We’ll Cover

Getting started with watch collecting can be a daunting task. With so many options from reputable brands, there’s an endless list of possibilities. We wanted to take what we considered to be the best options from our favorite brands and combine them into a short list anyone could start with. From TAG Heuer to Tudor, we feel this list has something for everyone looking for the best men’s watches under $3,000.

Let’s dive into what we think every new collector should consider for their collection!

TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber 5 Date

To start, if you’re looking for one of the best men’s watches under $3,000, TAG Heuer is a fantastic place to start your search. Throughout its history, TAG has provided the marketplace with several fantastic sports watches. One of my favorites about this Carrera is its ability to be used in almost any scenario without looking out of place. It can easily be dressed up or down depending on the event or day, and it’s also just a fantastic piece to wear around the house on the weekend.

TAG’s heritage through motorsport and Hollywood gives the brand a story and heritage on par with brands such as Rolex and OMEGA at a fraction of the entry-level price. TAG has consistently provided some of the best value in luxury watches, making them a fantastic option on our list of best men’s watches.

Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H

Lately, one of our favorite brands has been Hamilton. It’s likely not uncommon for new watch enthusiasts to be hearing about the Hamilton brand for the first time. Let’s take a quick look into their history to explain why I think the Intra-Matic Chronograph H deserves its spot on our list of best men’s watches under $3,000.

Hamilton’s Heritage

The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 in Lancaster County, PA. The brand’s name comes from James Hamilton, Andrew Hamilton’s (founder of Lancaster County, PA) son. Throughout the early development of the company and in the expansion of the U.S. railroads, Hamilton held over 56% of the market. During the Second World War, Hamilton shifted its business model to serve the military instead of consumer-facing products.

In 1966, Hamilton acquired the Buren Watch Company in Switzerland. Included in the purchase agreement were all of the technology and factories under the Buren brand. In 1969, Hamilton moved all production over to Switzerland and was purchased by SSIH (now The Swatch Group) in 1974.

Modern-Day Hamilton Watches

Fast forward to today, and Hamilton is creating some of the most timeless pieces on the market. The Intra-Matic Chronograph H looks like it comes straight from the mid-late 1900s. It’s one of the few pieces on our list of best men’s watches that I believe will forever look timeless. Add to that, this watch is so purely simple for a Chronograph. A beautiful 40mm diameter, no date, and a manual wound movement make it a future classic for me.

You can find an Intra-Matic Chronograph H with a black leather strap, but I feel that the Milanese bracelet adds so much to the aesthetic.

Tudor Prince Date Day

Tudor has been a favorite of mine since I started collecting watches. The brand’s story dates back to 1926 when Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf wanted to create a more attainable watch. From that moment on, Tudor has produced a Rolex-quality watch for a fraction of the price.

The Prince Date Day is an interesting one on our list of best men’s watches because for most reading this, it isn’t officially sold in the US. Instead, to find this watch, you’ll be heading to a grey-market site like Chrono24. A lot of dealers will import the Price Date Day from other regions to sell in the US due to their popularity.

The Best Men’s Watch Under $3k

I added the Tudor Prince Date Day to this list of best men’s watches under $3k because I felt it filled a need. When starting with watch collecting, I wanted something that looked more expensive than it was. There’s no reason to hide it. I firmly believe a lot of young enthusiasts want the same thing.

Tudor has long been the brand used to ‘test’ the market, and it’s one of my favorite parts of Tudor. It’s one of (if not the) best values on this list. The brand heritage speaks for itself, and the quality of the watch is unmatched by most other watches in this price category.

It’s you’re willing to purchase a watch not sold in the North American market, it’s a great option. It’s remained one of my favorite pieces in my collection, and it is one I will hold onto for years to come.

Keep in mind, that the Tudor Prince Date Day is available in a variety of materials and colors. Most often, you’ll see a Prince Date Day in Gold or Champagne, but the Linen dial is another fantastic spec if you want something more under-the-radar.

You’ll also see quite a few models with diamonds in the dial. This is my personal favorite mixed with the Champagne spec (shown above).

Word of Caution

When looking on sites like eBay and Chrono24 for a Tudor Prince Date Day, check the condition. I firmly believe purchasing one with box and papers included is important for a first time collector. It can often help retain 20% of the watch’s value long-term.

TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date

Lastly, we just had to add a dive watch to our list of the best men’s watches under $3k. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date is one of the most impressive dive watches under $3,000. While TAG was most notably known for its Chronos in the 1960s, in the ’80s, TAG gave Rolex some big competition.

The Aquaracer Professional 200 features the Caliber 5 automatic movement, which is praised for its dependability and ease of service. If you’re starting in watch collecting, TAG is a great place to start. They’ve made it to our list twice now, and I firmly believe a TAG Heuer fits well in any collection.

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date with a blue dial is one of the sleekest-looking dive watches on the market. While it is available with a black dial, I feel the design of the blue dial fits the watch perfectly. If you’re looking for an Aquaracer Professional, the blue dial is a must-have.

That tops off our list of the best men’s watches under $3,000. These watches could match any collection and hold their own through their heritage and design. The technical aspects of each watch are some of the highest-regarded in the industry. Add to that, each watch featured could make a statement anywhere it goes. If you’re looking to add one to a collection or looking to start one, these are all fantastic options.
